Wisdom teeth, clinically called third molars, are no longer necessary for chewing our foods. Scientists tell us that wisdom teeth exist because early humans needed them. When wisdom teeth grow, they can cause pain and pressure. Sometimes, they become impacted, stuck in the jawbone where they cannot erupt. Other times, they come in, but there is no room to spare in the mouth. The wisdom teeth cause other teeth to shift out of place and become misaligned, altering appearance and/or occlusion. Because of their location in the back of the mouth, third molars can be quite difficult to keep clean. They are prone to cavities and infections.
